802.16-2005 (802.16e) 標準化終了

unstrung.com によると、802.16e として作業が行われていたモバイル WiMAX 技術の IEEE での標準化作業が完了した。

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) this morning announced the approval of the 802.16e standard, the specification that will serve as the basis for mobile WiMax technology.<中略>

The new standard will officially be named 802.16-2005. Mobile WiMax trials and certification testing by the WiMAX Forum could now proceed in the first half of 2006, industry observers say, with products to follow in late 2006 or 2007.

802.16d（固定版 WiMAX）が 802.16-2004 と命名されたのと同様、802.16e の正式な名称は 802.16-2005 となった。
標準化作業完了につづいて、今後予定されているスケジュールとしては WiMAX フォーラムによる認証テストが 2006 年前半にも可能になり、2006 年後半から 2007 年にかけて 802.16-2005 対応製品が市場に出回ることが予想される。

The next step in mobile WiMax’s development will come on the ski slopes at the Turin Winter Olympics in Italy next February. On Monday, Telecom Italia announced it will run trials of mobile "WiBro" technology (the Korean version of WiMax) with South Korean electronics giant Samsung Corp. during the Olympics, Feb. 10-26.

サムソンの協力の元で韓国版モバイル WiMAX である WiBro を使用して、テレコムイタリアが 2006/2/10 - 26 に開催されるトリノオリンピックのスキー場でトライヤルを実施するとのこと。

Wi-Fiの転送速度はWiMAXに匹敵するが、信号伝送距離は及ばない。すなわち、Wi-Fiを利用して地域全体を網羅する屋外ネットワークを構築するには、何百というアクセスポイントを設置しなければならなくなるのだ。
