WLAN スイッチの統合。

例によって unstrung の記事なのだが、broadcom が Ethernet スイッチ用チップに無線 LAN スイッチ機能を統合したという記事が出ている。

記事の前半は今回発表されたチップ (StrataXGS III) の基本機能の話なのだが、記事中盤にこういうくだりがある。

Among the most notable features is the inclusion of wireless LAN switching capability. Broadcom sees this as the first step toward absorbing the wireless LAN switch into an Ethernet switch.

ただ、ここでいう "wireless LAN switching capability" の詳細が何であるかは記されていない。この Ethernet スイッチ用チップへの統合が必ずしも大きな意味を成さないことは、記事後半の次のくだりからも垣間見ることができる。

This doesn't, however, mean that the wireless LAN switch is a commodity yet -- good news for switch vendors such as Aruba Wireless Networks and Trapeze Networks Inc.. "There's a lot of software involved. You can't throw [chip integration] at that," Mathias (註：Farpoint Group analyst Craig Mathias) says.

現在の無線 LAN スイッチ機能は、ここで指摘されている通り、ソフトウェア処理が関与する部分が大きいので、ハードウェア化する事が現時点での最善策ではないという指摘である。

ただ、このアプローチが最善策となるのは、比較的近い将来かも知れないけれど……
