Blackberry というのは、米国で、特にハイテク産業の人が使っている、無線機能とメールクライアントがついた PDA。別の言い方をすると、メールを送れる、PIM つきのポケベル。この Blackberry を提供する RIM (Research in Motion) が Intel と共同して WiMAX を採用しようとしているのか？というニュース。
で、記事を読むと話の発端は CNBC でのニュースから来ている様子。次の Reuters のニュースに纏められている。

Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the Blackberry e-mail pager, has agreed to a joint development deal with the world's largest chip maker, Intel Corp. <中略>
CNBC reported that Research in Motion had agreed to a deal to use battery-saving chip technology from Intel. In return, Research in Motion will support Intel's push to encourage WiMAX technology, a long-distance wireless communications technology.<中略>
Another analyst said the two companies were expected to announce a deal this week at the Intel Developer Forum, the company's annual conference for computer hardware developers.
RIM と Intel の契約のポイントは、RIM が省電力のチップ技術を Intel から供給してもらう代わりに、RIM が Intel の WiMAX 展開キャンペーンの後押しをしてあげよう、というもので、今週開催されている Intel Developers Forum でアナウンスがあるかも知れない、と。
で、このニュースを受けて、brighthand.com では次のように先読みしている。
If this report is true, it almost certainly means that future BlackBerry handhelds developed by RIM will include Mobile WiMax (802.16e) functionality.
This standard is still in development, and estimates differ wildly on what it will offer, but expect a range that covers miles and a data transfer speed at least comparable to Wi-Fi, and possibly higher.
Mobile WiMax is considered one of the top competitors to rival high-speed networking technologies being developed by wireless service providers, like EV-DO and UMTS.
もしこの CNBC のニュースがホントなら、将来的に Blackberry は、現在開発中／技術標準化中の高速ネットワーク技術の Mobile WiMAX (802.16e) を採用するのではないかと。
ただ、ちょっと思うのですが、Blackberry って、狭帯域のポケベル網の上に成り立ってて、端末的には文字情報のやり取りしかできないけれど、ニッチなニーズがある微妙なバランスの上に成り立っている（はずな）のです。このポジションからブロードバンド網を持つ通信事業者のポジションに動くと、当然、競合プレイヤーが増えるのですが、果たして RIM として Intel の省電力のチップ技術と引き換えにそっちに進みたいのだろうか？
