Google WiMAX / WiMAX アンケート / トリプルプレイ
溜まっていた WiMAX 関係のニュースを一気読み。いつものように、記事引用ベースで。
一つ目は、ZDNet の Russel Shaw 氏のブログ、"How about Google WiMAX?" から。
Google がダークファイバーを購入しているといたり、ベイエリアで WiFi ホットスポットサービスを計画しているという噂話に対しての Russel Shaw 氏の提案はこの通り。
I think Google-sponsored WiMAX - which could cover a homes and businesses in a whole metro area -would be even a better idea. Once WiMAX arrives in the next couple of years, Google could acquire carriage rights from local service providers - many, but not all of whom are the Wi-Fi hotspot service providers are today. Then, Google becomes a partner-reseller.
WiFi ホットスポットより WiMax ベースの通信サービスのほうがいいんじゃない？というもの。通信事業者に新規参入する場合に WiMAX というのは手頃なテクノロジーであると捕らえられているという風に読める、ということか。
二つ目は Unstrung.com の "Readers Wait on Mobile WiMax " という Unstrung が実施した "Mobile WiMax: Broadband Anywhere" というアンケートを簡単に分析した記事から。

IEEE での 802.16e の活動状況について、標準化は 2005 年末までに行われる、などの説明があった後に、アンケートの分析が掲載されている。引用部分を考えるのが面倒なので、ほぼ全文を引用する。
Despite such momentum, there appears to be little confidence in an imminent deployment of mobile WiMax services. 32 percent of the 409 respondents reckon that "2009 or 2010" is a realistic timeframe for commercial network launches, with a further 31 percent tipping 2008 as the year when WiMax will finally go mobile.
Once services do arrive, it's unlikely that mobile WiMax will enjoy an easy ride. Just over half of respondents (54 percent) believe 3G cellular systems such as W-CDMA and CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO are the biggest rivals to WiMax in the wireless data market, followed by "emerging alternative broadband wireless systems," which score 22 percent of the vote. WiFi and cable/DSL technologies fare less well, recording 13 and 12 percent of the votes, respectively.
As for which factors will help push 802.16e services to the mass market, the availability of "inexpensive customer premises equipment" is seen by most (39 percent) as the critical driver of the mobile WiMax industry. "Ready available infrastructure" also scores highly (32 percent), with the supply of "cheap VOIP handsets" (16 percent) and "cheap PC cards" (13 percent) bringing up the rear.
Unstrung readers share a mixed view on whether the potential incompatibility of mobile WiMax kit with existing fixed infrastructure will affect the deployment of 802.16e services (see WiMax: A Spec Divided).
The majority of respondents (35 percent) are sitting on the fence at present, declaring that "it's too early to say." [Ed. note: Borrrrring!] A third (33 percent) argue that incompatibility will be a major thorn in the side of future success. A further 28 percent state that the issue will not be a major problem, but will threaten the health of some of the smaller market players.
What is clear, however, is the fact that the initial hype surrounding the launch of 802.16e services certainly appears to be fading. Recent reports from IDC and Unstrung Insider suggest that the mobile version of WiMax is unlikely to live up to expectations (see IDC Doubts Mobile WiMax and Mobile WiMax Faces Struggle).

また、ワイヤレスデータサービスにおける Mobile WiMAX の競合としては、54 % の回答者が W-CDMA（NTT ドコモ）や CDMA2000 1xEV-DO（KDDI au）のような 3G ベースの携帯電話サービスを、22 % の回答者が今後出てくるブロードバンドワイヤレスシステムを、またそれぞれ 13 % と 12 % の回答者が WiFi と CATV/ADSL を挙げている。
さらに、Mobile WiMAX ベースのサービスをマスマーケットで成功させるための要因としては、39 % の回答者が廉価な CPE の提供を、32% が実際の商用サービスの提供を、またそれぞれ 16 % と 13 % の回答者が廉価な VoIP 端末と PC カードの提供を挙げている。
で、最後の段落では、802.16e は当初騒いでいたほどには盛り上がらないのでは、と回答者の多くは考えている、ということらしい。
前半のアンケートの結果はそれなりに信用しても良いと思うのだが、最後の点については、unstrung （とか Light Reading とか Byte and Switch）の読者層って新しい技術で大騒ぎする人たちなので、ガートナーのハイプ曲線通りに沈静化してるだけだというのが、正しい読み方かと。
三つ目が、Alvarion が Intel の Rosedale チップ（WiMAX チップ）を使用した CPE をリリースしたという、ExtremeWiMAX の "Alvarion Ships End-User WiMAX Equipment" という記事から。

Alvarion announced the commercial availability of BreezeMAX Pro, a WiMAX-ready CPE that unofficially has been shipping for several months, according to Carlton O'Neal, the company's vice president of marketing.
Initially, the CPE will support only the 3.5-GHz frequency band, although the company has said previously that a follow-on product incorporating the 2.3-GHz to 2.5-GHz frequency band will ship at the beginning of 2006, O'Neal said.
最初にリリースされる製品は 3.5GHz 帯のみに対応しているが、2006 年初頭には 2.3 - 2.5GHz 帯に対応したものも提供するということ。この記事には値段が書かれて無いけれど、いくらくらいなんだろう？
四つ目が、またまた Alvarion だが、Wi-Fi Planet の "Alvarion, DirecTV Unplug WiMax Rumors" という記事から。

これは、Alvarion と DirecTV が WiMAX サービスを提供するという憶測に対して、両社が距離をおいた発言をしたという記事。
Networking gear maker Alvarion and satellite broadcaster DirecTV are distancing themselves from reports that the two companies are in negotiations over the possibility of providing WiMax to subscribers.
"We are exploring WiMax opportunities, but we are not in negotiations," Bob Marsocci, DirecTV's Vice President of Communications, tells Wi-Fi Planet.
Recently, Reuters reported that Alvarion "is in talks with DirecTV Group Inc. about supplying the satellite television service with wireless equipment that would boost its network."
Alvarion denies having had any talks specific to supplying DirecTV.
"Alvarion is engaged in talks with every service carrier that has a potential interest in WiMax," says Carlton O'Neal, the company's Vice President of Marketing. "We cannot divulge the status of those talks prematurely."
放送／通信を融合するトリプルプレイ的な文脈で WiMAX の展開を進めていく、というのはちょっと思いつかなかった。なるほどね。
と思っていたら、最後の記事もトリプルプレイの話。Yahoo! Finance に出ている WiNetworks の "NDS and WiNetworks Cooperate to Deliver Secure Integrated WiMAX Triple Play Solution for DBS Operators" というニュースリリース。

ワイヤレスでトリプルプレイという線を進んでいくと、ずいぶんとオモシロそうなモノが出てくるかも。ふむふむ。
